North Taoyuan Hakka Hall: A Cultural Center Celebrating Hakka Heritage

Enhancing Connection and Promoting Integration

To respond to the nearly 260,000 Hakka population in northern Taoyuan and to balance the development of the northern and southern areas, the Taoyuan City Government established the North District Hakka Guild Hall in Bade's Xiaoli life circle. The design, led by the Office of Public Construction Taoyuan, features a reinforced concrete two-story building constructed on an area of about 7627.28 square meters.

The North Taoyuan Hakka Hall stands out with its unique properties and strengths. It serves as a cultural center, providing a venue for various Hakka activities and promoting the integration of different ethnic groups. The design team, including Yong-Lian Tsou and Yu-Hsiang Shen, ensured that the building reflects the rich Hakka heritage while incorporating modern design elements.

Technologically, the design team utilized new materials and construction methods to create an elevated space with sound-absorbing properties, reducing the penetration of sound sources. The outdoor landscape incorporates anti-subsidence construction methods and artificial site flower terraces, maximizing water conservation and environmental resource reuse.

The North Taoyuan Hakka Hall spans 1878.64 square meters and is located in Taoyuan City, Taiwan. Its realization was completed in May 2021. The design process involved extensive research on environmental sustainability and resource reuse. As part of this effort, existing perforated plates were repurposed and combined with children's play equipment to create an entrance-shaped observatory tower, offering visitors a unique vantage point.

The design of the North Taoyuan Hakka Hall faced various challenges, including energy-saving, carbon reduction, and sustainable operation. The landscape pavement incorporates anti-subsidence construction methods to enhance water retention and durability. The flower terrace utilizes artificial site construction methods to achieve water conservation and landscape greening in the open space.

The North Taoyuan Hakka Hall stands as a testament to the commitment of the Taoyuan City Government and the Office of Public Construction Taoyuan to preserve and celebrate Hakka heritage. It serves as a cultural hub, promoting integration and providing a platform for the vibrant Hakka community to thrive.
